What's with the live fish centerpiece trend?

Does anyone else think it's a little cruel to subject living creatures to being centerpieces? I've been to a few wedding shows and have seen some poor bettas belly-up in their fancy little container.

What's with the live fish centerpiece trend?
I agree! What happens to the little fish after the fact? Do they meet their demise in a nearby toilet? It's a terribly sad trend that mirrors our very wasteful, disposable society.
Reply:we had them as the center pieces at our prom and i took one home - (all the fisies were adopted by loving prom goers) he lived in that for over a year which isn't bad for a fish!

betas breathe at the surface so if there's no room for them to breathe then they will die - if there isn't too much water in there they'll be fine... of course it's not the best for them (the beta i have now is in a 5.5 gallon tank with a heater and filter and all that fun stuff - he seems happy) but betas live naturally in small pools in rice patties so they don't need too much water or room just needs to be cleaned every so often and the water can't be straight from the tap... it needs to sit out before the little fishy can swim around in it...

if they are taken care of then there's no problem! buy them at a pet store (not through a wedding show) treat the water and be good to them!
Reply:the picture that you have is normal for people to have in their homes. they eat the roots, just need to clean every so often. my mother had one like that. he lived a long time, like almost 3 years. in the pet stores, they have them in itty bitty glass jars. But, to use them as center pieces, I don't like that idea. One time I went to a venue to check it out and they had a wedding set up in the bottom part of the building and they had these and it looked horrible!! What if no one wants to take them home with them? You can't have these fish in the same tank because they will fight each other, hince the name- chinese fighting fish. they are a beautiful little fish, and ALL animals should be treated with respect.
Reply:I've never seen it being used before but I don't see a problem with it. The pic you attached is a fighting fish and usually live in SMALLER tanks to themselves.

If the people are responsible with them after the wedding has finished... what's wrong with that? It's like saying, don't dress your puppy in a ballerinas outfit? They're not being hurt...!
Reply:fish dont care, until it gets loud. then I think they should be taken into another room. I went to a wedding like this when I was little and thought it was cool because I got 2 new pets, they died like 3 days later though. now I find it stupid. its just as cheap to go with candles or fake flowers.
Reply:Living creatures are not decorations. They don't care that they are advocating animal cruelty. Ask anyone who releases doves or butterflies and they'll tell you it's harmless when those who know better are well aware that it is harmful to them.
Reply:i've never actually seen it in a wedding i've been to. but the whole idea is just horrible i can' imagine myself sitting in a place where there's a fish that might be dead by the end of the night.
Reply:You people are ridiculous! WHO CARES? They are just FISH! They are fine in a vase, it's just the same as a damn fish tank! There will always be plenty more fish in the sea ahahhahahaha!!!!
Reply:I wouldn't do it because the fish can die during the reception or during the shower and then people are looking at dead fish all night. You never know if they are going to make it through the event or not.
Reply:I totally agree. I don't know how or where this trend started, but I always disagree with those that suggest this type of centerpiece.
Reply:I've never seen it myself. They probably die from over-feeding when people keep giving them wedding cake.
Reply:Not only do I think it's cruel, I don't even think it looks good...it looks trashy.
Reply:It's cheap, cute, and easy to give away.
